Why You Must Cancel 48 Hours Before Your Trenton Visit (And What Happens If You Don't)

Something came up? You need to cancel at least 48 hours before your scheduled in-person visit. Skip that step, and the facility counts it as a completed visit anyway. That means it goes toward the incarcerated person's monthly visit total - even though you never actually saw them.

Heads up: The 48-hour cancellation rule applies to in-person visits. Virtual visits follow different cancellation timing, so don’t assume the same rule covers both.

Here's where the 48-hour rule can really sting. General population inmates with visitation privileges get up to four in-person visits per month, with a maximum of one visit per weekend. When a missed cancellation still counts as a visit, you're not just wasting a trip - you're eating into the monthly total. It can also block your ability to use a weekend slot when you actually can make it.

Example: If you’re scheduled for an in-person visit but don’t cancel at least 48 hours ahead, that visit can still count toward the four-visit monthly limit - even though you never made it through the door.

All in-person visits must be scheduled at least 15 hours in advance through the GTL scheduler, so your plans are tied to that system. Tip: If you’re close to the 48-hour cutoff and you’re not sure whether your cancellation will count in time, call the Visitation Inquiry Line to clarify before the visit is treated as used.

Tips

  • Schedule carefully in the GTL scheduler, and double-check that your visit is set for the correct day and time (remember: in-person visits must be scheduled at least 15 hours ahead).
  • Set two reminders for cancellations: one for 72 hours before the visit and another for 49–50 hours before, so you don’t accidentally miss the 48-hour cutoff.
  • Plan around the limits: no more than one in-person visit per weekend and up to four in-person visits per month - so a counted no-show can shrink your options fast.
  • If your plans are shaky (work, rides, childcare), choose a date you’re confident you can keep so you don’t burn one of the monthly visits.

Virtual visits work differently. According to the virtual visitation FAQs, you can cancel one day in advance and attempt to modify a visit two days ahead. Make sure you're following the right rule for whichever type of visit you booked.
