What to Bring and Expect for Your First On-site Visit at NWRCC
Your first on-site visit at NWRCC goes a lot smoother when you handle approval and scheduling ahead of time, then show up with the right ID and realistic expectations for check-in.
Before You Go
- ✓ Create a free visitation account and submit your photo plus a government-issued photo ID for facility approval before you try to schedule.
- ✓ Schedule your visit at least 24 hours in advance. Walk-ins are not treated as scheduled visits.
On-site (public) visits at NWRCC are free. There's no payment step, but you do still need to be approved and scheduled before you show up.
Bring an official photo ID that includes your date of birth. You will be asked to present it at check-in, so keep it easy to reach when you arrive.
- ✓ Your official photo ID (the same one you expect to use at check-in)
- ✓ Car keys only, if you can keep everything else in your vehicle
- ✓ Any paperwork you may need for your own records (for example, notes with the exact spelling and date of birth you used when you created your visitation account)
- ✓ A written list of important phone numbers, in case you need to make a quick call before you enter
On-site (public) visitation at NWRCC runs Monday through Friday in set time blocks: 8:00 to 9:00 am, 9:40 to 10:40 am, and 1:00 to 4:00 pm. The day is structured around those blocks, so plan your travel with some buffer. Show up late and you could miss the window you scheduled for.
No weekends or holidays: NWRCC does not offer on-site visiting on Saturdays, Sundays, or holidays.
When you arrive, you'll check in with Corrections staff. During check-in, the facility runs an outstanding warrant check and looks for any court orders that prevent contact. If something flags during those checks, staff can stop the visit from going forward that day. Give yourself a little extra time so you're not rushing through this step.
- ✓ If the visitor is under 18, they must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
- ✓ Children cannot be left unattended in the lobby area.
- ✓ Keep your behavior and appearance appropriate during the visit. Profanities, nudity, and illicit gestures are prohibited, and both visitors and inmates must remain fully clothed.
Denied Visits
- ✓ You do not have an official photo ID with your date of birth, or you forget it.
- ✓ The facility’s warrant check or no-contact court order check prevents the visit from proceeding.
- ✓ You appear to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- ✓ You attempt to smuggle contraband into the facility.
Even after you check in, a visit can be delayed or cut short if security issues come up inside the facility. Contraband is treated seriously. If a visitor attempts to smuggle contraband, they'll be asked to leave and will lose future visiting privileges.
Northwest Regional Corrections Center is located at 816 Marin Ave., Crookston, MN.
Before you drive over, confirm you're coming during an on-site visiting window (Monday through Friday: 8:00 to 9:00 am, 9:40 to 10:40 am, or 1:00 to 4:00 pm). There's no on-site visiting on weekends or holidays, so a quick schedule check can save you a wasted trip.
