How to Schedule a Visit at a Georgia Prison (GDC): Step-by-Step

Scheduling a visit in the Georgia Department of Corrections comes down to two basics: you need to be an approved visitor, and you need to submit your request through the GDC scheduled visit form.

You'll schedule your visit using the GDC scheduled visit form (labeled "Request a visit" on the site). But before that works, you need to be on your loved one's approved visitor list. Getting approved starts with filling out the GDC Visitation Request Form and sending the completed form to the specific facility where your loved one is housed.

Approval isn't automatic. Your first step is completing the Visitation Request Form and submitting it to the facility where the inmate is housed. Not sure which facility that is? Confirm it first. Make sure your form goes to that specific location, not a different prison or a central office.

Once you're approved, submit your visit request through the GDC scheduled visit form (the "Request a visit" form). Already have a visit scheduled and need to bring someone else? GDC provides an "Add Visitor" option that lets you find your scheduled visitation and add people to it. If plans change, the "Cancel my visit" option lets you find and cancel a previously scheduled appointment.

Weekend deadline: For weekends, the cutoff time to request visitation is 5:00 PM on Wednesday of the same week.

State holiday deadline: For state holidays, the cutoff time to request visitation is 5:00 PM, three days before each holiday.

The visitation request form includes identification fields as part of the requestor information. You'll see an "ID Type" dropdown where you select Driver's License, State ID, or "None."

Watch the age prompts on the form. The requestor must be 18 years or older to select certain options. If you're helping a younger family member plan a visit, an adult will likely need to be the one completing the request.

After you submit your request, hang on to your scheduled visit details so you can make changes if needed. If another person needs to join an existing visit, use the "Add Visitor" option to add them. Can't make it anymore? Use the "Cancel my visit" option to find and cancel your appointment. Need a facility's street address for paperwork or trip planning? GDC's locations page lists facility street addresses along with each facility's security classification. For approval questions, contact the facility where your loved one is incarcerated directly, since that's where the Visitation Request Form must be submitted.
