Who to Contact About an Inmate in Georgia: Counselor → Warden → Ombudsman
Trying to get help for someone in a Georgia Department of Corrections facility? The fastest path is usually following the chain of command. Here's the order to use, when to escalate outside the facility, and what the Ombudsman can (and cannot) do.
- Contact the inmate’s counselor. For medical concerns and other care and treatment issues, start here.
- Escalate to the chief counselor. If the counselor cannot resolve the issue, ask for the chief counselor next.
- Contact the Deputy Warden of Care & Treatment. This is the next level for concerns tied to care and treatment.
- Contact the warden. If the issue still is not resolved, the warden is the next step in the facility chain.
Note: In many situations, it also helps to have your loved one use the inmate grievance process while you are contacting staff on their behalf.
If you've worked through the facility chain and the problem still isn't resolved, contact the Regional Director next. Still no traction? That's when you reach out to Ombudsman staff.
The Office of the Ombudsman acts as a bridge between concerned civilians and the Department of Corrections. Their job is to gather information, look for patterns that could point to larger system problems, and help ensure offenders' rights and safety are protected.
Note: The Ombudsman unit has no jurisdiction over parole-related concerns. For parole matters, contact Pardons and Paroles.
