How to Get Approved to Visit Someone at Turney Center (CR-2152 step-by-step)
Getting approved to visit at Turney Center starts with the CR-2152 Visitation Application. Fill it out carefully. The completed application becomes part of the inmate's institutional record and is treated as a public record. Every applicant goes through an NCIC background check, so accuracy matters. Double-check names, addresses, and other identifying information before you submit. Approval isn't permanent. The CR-2152 has to be updated every two years (24 months), so plan on renewing if you want to stay on the approved list long-term.
Start by getting a blank CR-2152 form. Turney Center provides blank visitation applications to inmates, and your loved one can give you a copy to complete. Want the visitors' handbook? Include a self-addressed stamped envelope with your application, and they'll mail it to you.
Complete the CR-2152 in full. Answer every question. Don't leave sections blank. You'll also need to attach a current photograph where the form indicates. Missing the photo? Your application won't be processed. Once everything is filled out and the photo is attached, return the completed form to the Associate Warden or Deputy Superintendent in charge of visitation within 30 days.
Warning: If you falsify the CR-2152, you will be disapproved and you cannot resubmit a new application for at least six months.
Mail the CR-2152 directly to the facility. Address the envelope to the Associate Warden of Security (or the Deputy Superintendent at MLTC), and include the prison name and address. Don't mail the completed form to the offender for them to forward. Forms mailed to the offender will not be accepted.
Note: Before you mail anything, confirm the exact Turney Center mailing address on the Tennessee Department of Correction facility page. Use that address on your envelope.
After the facility receives your application, expect about 30 days for processing. Applications should be approved or denied within 30 days of receipt.
During processing, the facility runs an NCIC background check on every visitor applicant.
Visitor approvals are limited. Immediate family members can be approved, and the inmate can also have up to eight additional adults on their list. If you're not immediate family, talk with your loved one about who's already on the list before you apply. That way you'll both have realistic expectations.
Note: You cannot visit until the CR-2152 is approved. The exception is for immediate family of newly committed inmates who are within 60 days of intake.
If your application is denied because it was falsified, the consequence is steep. You'll be disapproved and cannot submit a new visitor application for at least six months. Before you send it, re-check every answer for accuracy. Unsure about a detail? Take the time to confirm it rather than guessing.
Denials also happen for fixable reasons: leaving questions unanswered or forgetting the required photo. Complete the form in full and attach your photo correctly to give your application the best chance. Once you're approved, remember the CR-2152 has to be updated every 24 months. Keep that renewal cycle in mind even if you need to reapply after a denial.
Common Mistakes
- ✓ Using a P.O. Box as your address on the CR-2152 (it is not allowed)
- ✓ Leaving questions blank or forgetting to attach a current photo
- ✓ Waiting until the last minute to get a blank CR-2152 from the inmate
Tip: Expect an NCIC background check as part of the review. Also keep the approval cap in mind: immediate family can be approved, plus up to eight additional adults.
