What to Expect During Security Screening at Turney Center: Body Scanners, Searches, and Items Policy

Before entering the visitation area at Turney Center, you'll go through multiple security screenings, including a body scanner. Every visitor goes through this process. Plan for it as part of your arrival and bring as little as possible with you.

Allowed Items

• ✓ Photo ID
• ✓ Car keys or key fob

• ✓ Baby items as needed (including diapers, formula powder, and unopened sealed baby food). Place them in a clear plastic bag.

Planning to use the vending machines? Most visitation areas at Turney Center use a debit card system. You'll need to purchase or reload your vending card in the lobby before entering the visitation area.

Prohibited and Vehicle

• ✓ Leave phones, smart watches, wallets, and other personal items in your secured vehicle (do not bring them into the visitation area)
• ✓ Do not smoke or vape on state property

Vehicle searches happen routinely at Turney Center. Your safest bet is to arrive with as little as possible. Make sure anything that shouldn't be on facility property stays secured in your car or is left offsite before you pull onto the grounds.

Screening is mandatory for all visitors. If you decline the body scanner or any other required screening, you won't be allowed into the visitation area. You'll need to address whatever caused the issue and try again on a future visit.

If the issue is your approval status, focus on the visitation application. Applications require a current, original photo (not a photocopy) and are subject to NCIC background checks. Don't mail your completed form to the offender; forms sent that way aren't accepted. Processing typically takes about 30 days, and you won't be admitted until your application is approved. The exception: immediate family of new inmates can visit within 60 days from intake.
