When you arrive at Tygart Valley Regional Jail, check-in is your first stop. Every adult visitor signs the facility logbook and shows a valid government-issued photo ID before going any further.

Heads up: If you have the odor of alcohol, appear inebriated, or seem under the influence of drugs, you will not be permitted to visit and will be required to leave state property.

Bring a valid government‑issued photo ID for check‑in. Acceptable examples include a Driver’s/Operator’s license, a Non‑Driving Identification Card, a U.S. Passport or U.S. Passport Card, or a U.S. Military ID.

After you enter the facility, every adult visitor must sign the logbook. Plan a little extra time for this step, especially if more than one adult is visiting with you.

You'll go through security screening before entering the visiting area. The facility may use any combination of canine searches (if available), a magnetometer (metal detector), x-ray machines, and pat searches. Which methods they use can vary day to day, so be ready for any of them.

Tip: Leave prohibited items in your car. Bringing a purse or phone to the screening area slows everything down and could prevent you from getting through.

Before entering the visiting area, you'll store your belongings in a provided locker for the duration of the visit. Coats, jackets, and any outerwear go in the locker too.

  • You may bring in one (1) pacifier for a baby, if applicable.
  • If an officer deems it necessary, mobility or medical aids such as a cane, wheelchair, or oxygen may be allowed into the visiting area.
  • Do not bring purses, pocketknives, cell phones, diaper bags, or watches into the visitation area.

If a medical condition prevents you from passing through the metal detector (a heart pacemaker or metal pins, for example), bring an original statement from your physician describing the condition. Staff will review it during screening.

Since everything goes in a locker, plan as if you won't have access to your belongings until the visit ends. Even if you leave early, you'll still retrieve your items from the locker afterward.

Reminder: Visitors who have the odor of alcohol, appear inebriated, or seem under the influence of drugs will not be permitted to visit and will be required to leave state property.
