Visiting Checklist for Union Parish Work Release (LA): What to Bring, What Not to Bring, and Rules for Kids

You'll need to be on the approved visitor list before you can visit someone at Union Parish Work Release. In Louisiana, your loved one starts the process - they request to add you as a visitor, then you apply. The facility can still limit visits based on security needs or space, so confirm you're approved before making the drive.

  • Confirm your loved one requested to add you to their visiting list
  • Ask whether any documentation is needed for approval (and what to bring)
  • Double-check the exact name you’re approved under (including any aliases or name changes)

Bring a photo ID every time. Staff check identification at each visit - not just your first one - so don't assume you can skip it because you've been before.

  • Picture ID (required for every visit if you’re 18+)
  • Make sure the name on your ID matches the name you’re approved to visit under

Travel light. Louisiana visiting rules prohibit controlled substances, alcoholic beverages, marijuana, tobacco or tobacco-related items, and anything that records photos, video, or audio. Cell phones and other electronics aren't allowed in the visiting area - leave them secured in your vehicle.

  • Cell phone and other electronic devices
  • Cameras and any audio/video recording equipment
  • Tobacco and tobacco-related items
  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Marijuana
  • Controlled substances/illicit drugs

Warning: If you bring prohibited items to the visiting area, you can lose your visit for the day.

Need medication during your visit? Only prescribed medication that's life-saving or life-sustaining is allowed. Bring just what you need for the visit, and tell staff at the visiting desk upfront - don't wait for them to find it during check-in.

  • Bring only prescribed, life-saving or life-sustaining medication
  • Limit the quantity to what you need for the duration of the visit
  • Keep it in its prescription container with identifying information
  • Declare the medication at the visiting desk before you enter
Visiting Checklist for Union Parish Work Release (LA): What to Bring, What Not to Bring, and Rules for Kids

Kids can visit, but supervision rules are strict. Anyone under 18 must stay with their parent or legal guardian at all times on facility grounds. You can't leave children unattended - not even briefly in the parking lot or lobby. There are also restrictions for visitors with sex-offense history. If you have a current or prior conviction for a sex crime involving a minor (or documented history of sex abuse with a minor), you generally cannot visit with any minor child unless the warden approves an exception. If this applies to your situation, confirm the rules before planning a child's visit.

  • Bring the parent/legal guardian who will stay with the child the entire time on facility grounds
  • Bring the adult’s picture ID (required for visitors 18+)
  • Plan ahead for supervision: children cannot be left alone at any time
  • If a sex-offense restriction may apply, confirm whether a warden-authorized exception is required before bringing a minor

Important: If a sex-crime conviction or documented history involving a minor applies, visits with minors are generally not allowed unless the warden approves an exception - verify before you bring a child.

During contact visits, physical contact is limited. You can share a brief hug and kiss at the start and end of your visit. In between, holding hands is the only contact allowed.

If your loved one is still in intake status, you may not be able to visit yet. Louisiana rules don't allow visitation during intake, which typically covers the first 30 days after placement. If intake lasts longer, they may be able to request a special visit with immediate family. Once intake ends, the facility may authorize immediate-family visits while the full visitation application is being processed.
