At USP Atwater, showing up in provocative or revealing clothing can get you denied visitation. That could mean a long drive (and a lot of stress) for nothing. Think through your outfit before you leave. I'd recommend reviewing USP Atwater's visiting regulations before you travel. Rules can be enforced strictly, and having a backup outfit in the car can save the day if staff decide your clothing doesn't meet the dress code.

  • Revealing shorts, including skirts or shorts that are two inches or more above the knee
  • Halter tops
  • Crop tops
  • Low-cut blouses or dresses
  • Backless tops
  • Sleeveless garments
  • Bathing suits
  • See-through garments of any type
  • Leotards
  • Spandex
  • Miniskirts
  • Clothing that looks like inmate clothing (khaki or green military-type clothing)
  • Hats or caps

Clothing is only one part of getting into the visiting room. Bringing prohibited items can also get you turned away. Do not bring weapons, explosives, drugs or other intoxicants, currency, cameras (of any type), recording equipment, telephones, radios, pagers, or other electronic devices. Traveling with kids? Check their pockets and bags carefully so nothing prohibited ends up in their possession.

  1. Review USP Atwater’s visiting regulations before you leave: Build your plan around the facility’s current rules, and factor in any state or local travel advisories.
  2. Choose conservative clothing: Avoid revealing shorts or skirts, and skip tops that are halter, crop, low-cut, backless, or sleeveless.
  3. Avoid “club,” “gym,” and “beach” clothing: Do not wear bathing suits, see-through items, leotards, spandex, or miniskirts.
  4. Skip anything that resembles inmate clothing: Leave khaki or green military-type clothing at home.
  5. Take off hats and caps: Plan to enter without them.
  6. Leave prohibited items behind: Do not bring weapons, explosives, drugs/intoxicants, currency, cameras, recording devices, phones, radios, pagers, or other electronics.
  7. If you’re unsure, confirm before you travel: When an outfit or item feels borderline, check the facility guidance again before you head out.
