What to Wear (and What Not to Bring) When Visiting USP Big Sandy: Visitor Checklist
Visiting USP Big Sandy for the first time? A little prep goes a long way. Use this checklist to pick clothing that meets the dress code and make sure prohibited items—especially common electronics—stay out of your pockets and bags.
USP Big Sandy enforces its dress code strictly. Show up in something provocative or revealing, and staff can turn you away - even if everything else checks out.
- ✓ Revealing shorts
- ✓ Halter tops
- ✓ Bathing suits
- ✓ See-through garments of any type
- ✓ Crop tops
- ✓ Low-cut blouses or dresses
- ✓ Leotards
- ✓ Spandex
- ✓ Miniskirts
- ✓ Backless tops
- ✓ Hats or caps
- ✓ Sleeveless garments
- ✓ Skirts two inches or more above the knee
- ✓ Dresses or skirts with a high-cut split (back, front, or side)
Skip anything that looks like inmate attire. Khaki pants, green military-style clothing, or anything resembling a uniform can cause problems at check-in - and may get you denied entry.
The visitor notification/entry form lists exactly what's banned on Bureau grounds and inside the facility. Travel light, and double-check your pockets, purse, and diaper bag before walking in.
- ✓ Weapons
- ✓ Explosives
- ✓ Drugs
- ✓ Intoxicants
- ✓ Cameras of any type
- ✓ Recording equipment
- ✓ Telephones (any type)
- ✓ Radios
- ✓ Pagers
- ✓ Electronic devices
Bringing medication? You'll need to declare it when you arrive. The visitor form asks you to list everything you're carrying.
Your medication stays at the entry area during the visit - you can't bring it into the visiting room. Keep it in the original prescription container so staff can verify what it is when you list it.
By entering - or even attempting to enter - USP Big Sandy, you're consenting to a search under BOP policy and 28 C.F.R. Part 511. Refuse the search, and you won't get in.

Before you head out, give the visitor notification/entry form one last look. Check your pockets and bags again - especially for medication and electronics. And expect the standard entry process, including the search consent required on BOP grounds.
