What Happens When You Arrive at USP Terre Haute: Search, Entry, and Prohibited Items
Your first visit to USP Terre Haute will go smoothly if you understand what staff screen for, what you can't bring inside, and how to handle things like medication at entry.
By entering Bureau of Prisons grounds (or even attempting to), you consent to a search under Bureau policy and federal regulations (28 C.F.R. Part 511). Refuse the search, and you won't get in. Plan ahead: keep your pockets, bags, and vehicle free of anything that could cause problems at the gate.
Prohibited Items
- ✓ Weapons
- ✓ Explosives
- ✓ Drugs or intoxicants
- ✓ Currency
- ✓ Cameras (of any type)
- ✓ Recording equipment
- ✓ Telephones (any type)
- ✓ Radios
- ✓ Pagers
- ✓ Electronic devices
- ✓ Any other object that violates federal law or is prohibited by BOP regulations or policies
Bringing a prohibited item onto Bureau grounds can get you turned away. Some items also carry criminal penalties. The safest approach? Leave anything questionable at home and keep your visit simple.
If you need to carry medication, expect extra screening. All medication must be listed on your visitation form and left at the entry area during the visit. Bring it in the original container with the prescription label. This makes it easier to list accurately, though the key requirement is declaring it on the form and leaving it at entry.
You can typically greet and say goodbye with a handshake, hug, or kiss (in good taste) at the start and end of your visit. Staff may limit physical contact for security reasons or to maintain order in the visiting area. Conjugal visits are not permitted in the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
- Verify the visiting schedule before you travel. BOP institutions generally offer visiting on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, but you should confirm USP Terre Haute’s specific visiting hours on its bop.gov facility page.
- Expect to be searched when you enter. By entering or attempting to enter BOP grounds or facilities, you consent to a search under Bureau policy and 28 C.F.R. Part 511.
- Leave prohibited items behind. Weapons, drugs or intoxicants, currency, cameras, recording equipment, phones, and other electronics are prohibited, along with anything else barred by federal law or BOP policy.
- Declare any medication and be ready to leave it at entry. All medication you carry must be listed on the visitation form and left at the entry area during your visit.
Reminder: Refusing a search means you won't enter BOP grounds. Bringing prohibited items or forgetting to list your medication can also end your visit before it starts. Check USP Terre Haute's current visiting hours and rules before you go.
