Who Can Visit an Inmate at USP Terre Haute? Understanding Approved Visitor Categories
You can't just show up at USP Terre Haute and ask to visit. You must be on the inmate's approved visiting list and cleared by the Bureau of Prisons (BOP).
Visitation at USP Terre Haute works on a two-part system. First, the inmate must add you to their approved visiting list. Then the BOP has to clear you. Both pieces need to be in place - if either is missing, you won't get in.
Family members are the most common visitors. BOP guidelines allow inmates to include relatives like grandparents, aunts, uncles, in-laws, and cousins on their list. If you fall into one of these categories, you're exactly the type of visitor the BOP expects - as long as you pass the clearance process.
Visiting lists go beyond family. The BOP also recognizes clergy and religious group members, civic group members, former or prospective employers, sponsors, parole advisors, attorneys, and foreign officials in certain situations. So if you're a faith leader, mentor, or lawyer - not a relative - you may still qualify to visit.
Friends can be approved too, but there's a cap: inmates are limited to 10 friends or personal associates on their visiting list. This limit doesn't affect other categories like clergy, employers, or attorneys. But if you're visiting as a friend rather than family or another recognized role, space on the list can fill up.
Timing matters for new arrivals. When someone first enters the BOP system or transfers to a new facility, their visiting list may not exist yet. During this gap, immediate family members may be allowed to visit if the relationship can be verified through the inmate's Pre-Sentence Report. This exception helps family connect before the formal list is finalized.
Clearance starts with paperwork. You'll need to complete the BP-A0629 visitor information form - a questionnaire and release - to be considered for visiting privileges. This form kicks off the review process, so make sure you fill it out and return it as directed.
Note: The BP-A0629 includes a release that authorizes institution officials to send inquiries to law enforcement or crime information agencies to help determine whether you’re suitable to be approved as a visitor.
Completing the form is just one step. Even after you submit the BP-A0629 and the BOP clears you, you still can't visit unless the inmate has added you to their list. If you're wondering why you haven't been approved, check both boxes: your clearance status and whether the inmate actually put you on the list.
