What to Bring (and What to Leave Home) When Visiting VCFW
A smooth visit starts before you walk in the door. Use the checklist below to make sure you have what you need for VCFW—and to avoid bringing something that could slow you down at screening or get you turned away.
Bring at least one valid picture ID to VCFW. The name and details on your ID need to match the information on your visitation application, so double-check before you leave home.
- ✓ Driver’s License
- ✓ Passport (only if you do not reside in the United States)
- ✓ Military ID
- ✓ Other official picture ID issued by a federal or state agency
If you’re doing video visitation, the ID rules still apply for adults. Visitors who are 18 or older must have a valid, government-issued photo ID and register using their legal name.
For in-person visits at VCFW, keep coverage in mind: clothing must cover from your neck to your kneecaps. Wear appropriate underwear, and keep footwear on at all times.
Leave watches at home or locked in your car. VCFW prohibits all wearable technology during visits - that includes items like Google Glasses.
For video visits, treat it like a no-recording zone. Recording or filming isn't allowed. Taking pictures or screenshots of the inmate is prohibited, and so are third-party recordings.
If you rely on a service or guide animal, don't assume you can bring them without advance notice. Animals may be permitted in the visitation area only with prior facility approval - submit a request ahead of time to get permission before your visit.
- Bring medical documentation - If you’re pregnant or have a medical condition that keeps you from going through the electronic scanning device, bring documentation from your medical provider confirming you can’t use it.
- Ask staff for the alternate screening option - The facility will offer you an alternate search procedure.
Plan to arrive at VCFW one hour before your scheduled in-person visit. That buffer gives you time for security screening without rushing.
Note: No food or drinks are allowed inside the facility, and you won’t have access to vending machines.
