Duffield MailGuard: Why Your Letters Are Sent to Florida and Why You Shouldn't Mail Originals

Sending a letter to someone at Duffield? You might be surprised to learn it goes to Florida first. Duffield routes regular mail through Smart Communications' MailGuard system, which scans everything into a digital format for inmates to view. That means where you send it—and what you put inside—really matters.

Duffield MailGuard: Why Your Letters Are Sent to Florida and Why You Shouldn't Mail Originals

Regular postal mail to someone at Duffield doesn't go directly to the jail. Instead, you'll send it to Smart Communications (MailGuard) in Florida. This has been the process since January 1, 2021. Smart Communications receives your letter, scans it into their system, and makes it available for the inmate to view digitally. Use this exact mailing address for regular letters, postcards, and greeting cards: Smart Communications-Southwest Virginia Regional Jail – Duffield Attention To: (insert INMATE NAME-ID NUMBER) P.O. Box 9113 Seminole, FL 33775

How to Address

  • Write the inmate’s name clearly on the outside of the envelope or postcard.
  • Include the inmate’s ID number clearly on the outside of the envelope or postcard.
  • If the name and ID number aren’t included, the mail will be returned to sender.

Reminder: Regular mail gets scanned into the Smart Communications system, so write the address clearly and legibly. This helps ensure it reaches the right person.

Do not mail originals: MailGuard scans regular mail into the system, and the original item you send will be destroyed after scanning.

  • Birth certificates (originals)
  • Marriage certificates (originals)
  • Social Security cards (originals)
  • Photos/pictures you want back

Legal mail and money orders skip the Florida scanning system entirely. Send those directly to the facility instead: Duffield Facility INMATE NAME P.O. Box 367 Duffield, VA 24244

Keep it separated: If it’s legal mail or a money order, send it to the Duffield facility address - not the Florida MailGuard P.O. Box.
