Why Your Mail to Duffield Now Goes to Florida — Where to Send Regular Mail, Legal Mail, and Money Orders
If your letter to Duffield is suddenly getting routed to Florida, don't worry — you're not doing anything wrong. Regular inmate mail now goes through Smart Communications' MailGuard process. Just make sure each type of mail goes to the right address so nothing gets delayed or sent back.
Since January 1, 2021, all regular inmate postal mail for Duffield goes to Smart Communications (MailGuard) - not directly to the jail in Virginia. Send regular letters, postcards, and greeting cards to: Smart Communications - Southwest Virginia Regional Jail - Duffield Jail, P.O. Box 9113, Seminole, FL 33775. Include the facility name, the inmate's full name, and their ID number on the envelope so it reaches the right person.
- ✓ Smart Communications - Southwest Virginia Regional Jail - Duffield Jail
- ✓ Attention To: Inmate Name – Inmate ID Number
- ✓ P.O. Box 9113
- ✓ Seminole, FL 33775
- ✓ Inmate name and ID number clearly printed on the outside of the envelope or postcard
Your mail won't arrive at the jail as a paper original. Regular postal mail - letters, postcards, greeting cards - gets scanned into Smart Communications' system. Inmates then access it electronically.
Warning: Originals are destroyed after scanning. If you're sending photos or anything you want to keep, send copies - not irreplaceable items.
Inmates view their scanned mail through the kiosk or tablet system. After release, they can log into SmartInmate.com with their inmate number and password to download photos, messages, and mail for free.
Legal mail and money orders don't go to the Florida address. Send them directly to Duffield: INMATE NAME, P.O. Box 367, Duffield, VA 24244. Mark legal correspondence clearly as legal mail.
- ✓ Send money orders only (no checks)
- ✓ Make sure the money order includes the sender’s name and return address
- ✓ Include the inmate’s ID number on the money order
- ✓ Plan ahead: money orders must arrive at least one business day prior to commissary
- ✓ Print the inmate’s name and ID number clearly so it isn’t returned
Missing info on the envelope is the fastest way to get mail returned. Duffield requires the inmate's name and ID number printed clearly on the outside - no exceptions. Write it large and legible so it gets to the right person.
- ✓ Put the inmate’s name and ID number on the address side of the envelope (not only inside)
- ✓ Use a clear format like: Inmate Name – Inmate ID Number
- ✓ For regular letters/cards, use the Florida MailGuard address: Smart Communications - Southwest Virginia Regional Jail - Duffield Jail, Attention To: Inmate Name–ID, P.O. Box 9113, Seminole, FL 33775
- ✓ For legal mail and money orders, use the Virginia address: INMATE NAME, P.O. Box 367, Duffield, VA 24244
- ✓ Always include your return address so anything that can’t be processed can be returned
