How to Register for a ViaPath Account and Get Approved to Visit (Indiana DOC)
Getting approved to visit someone in the Indiana Department of Correction starts with registering on ViaPath and completing the electronic visitation application. Here's the step-by-step process, plus the documents you'll need to avoid delays.
Before you can schedule any visit - in-person or online - you need to register for a ViaPath account and get approved. Even if you know the facility and have a date in mind, scheduling comes after approval. Want to move quickly? Focus on getting your account set up and submitting your application with the right documents the first time.
- Register your ViaPath account - Create an account with the vendor (it’s free), since you’ll need it to access the visitation application.
- Start the electronic visitation application - The Indiana DOC uses an electronic application through the IDOC ViaPath website for visitation.
- Complete State Form 14387 in the system - This is the Application for Visiting Privileges, and it’s the form used to apply to visit.
Note: Creating a ViaPath account is free. The visitation application you’ll complete is State Form 14387, the “Application for Visiting Privileges.”
Visitors 16 or older must submit photo identification with their application. Indiana DOC is specific about what it accepts - don't assume any ID will work. If yours isn't on the approved list, your application can stall while you track down the right document.
- ✓ Valid driver’s (operator’s) license from your state of residence
- ✓ Valid state photo identification card from your state of residence
- ✓ Valid photo military identification card
- ✓ Valid passport
- ✓ Valid government identification card (including foreign governments)
- ✓ Any required supplemental documents used to prove identity (may include items such as Social Security cards, birth certificates, approval letters, etc.)
Sometimes the application requires supplemental documents to verify your identity. When that's the case, you'll need to submit them electronically to the Facility Visitation Coordinator at the specific facility you want to visit. Gathering the paperwork isn't enough - you have to get it to the right person, in the format they expect.
Warning: If you don’t submit required supplemental documentation, your application can be delayed or rejected.
- Identify what’s required - If the application process calls for supplemental documentation to prove identity, gather those documents before you submit.
- Submit documents electronically to the right place - Send the required supplemental documentation electronically to the Facility Visitation Coordinator for the facility you plan to visit.
- Double-check completeness before you hit submit - Missing documents can slow the review down or lead to rejection, so make sure everything requested is included.
After you apply, Indiana DOC runs criminal background and warrant checks on every applicant 16 or older. If an active warrant turns up, the facility's Investigations and Intelligence officer and/or a Correctional Police Officer (CPO) reviews the application. The agency that issued the warrant is contacted for a disposition, and local law enforcement is notified as appropriate. Your criminal history stays confidential - it's not shared with the incarcerated person.
Note: If an active warrant comes up during the check, the facility reviews the application and contacts the issuing agency, with local law enforcement notified.
Background and warrant checks take time, and facility reviews can add more. The best way to avoid delays? Submit a complete, accurate application with all required documentation upfront. Missing identity documents or a warrant-related review can stretch the timeline longer than you'd expect.
Two things commonly derail approval: missing paperwork and inaccurate information. Skip required documents or leave out details, and your application gets delayed - or rejected. Falsify any part of the application, and the consequence is serious: a one-year ban from all correctional facilities.
Warning: Falsifying a visitation application can result in a one-year ban from all correctional facilities.
