Wake County Detention Visiting Checklist: ID, Lockers, Limits, and Prohibited Items
A little prep goes a long way. This checklist covers what ID you need, visitor limits, locker rules, and items that'll get your visit denied.
Bring a picture ID. You'll show it at registration, where it stays for the entire visit - so don't expect to have it on you while you're inside.
- ✓ U.S. government-issued ID cards
- ✓ U.S. passports
- ✓ International passports
- ✓ Government identification cards from countries other than the U.S.
- ✓ Mexican Consular identification cards
Only two visitors can see an inmate at a time: either two adults, or one adult and one child. Both visitors must go in together - you can't split it into back-to-back visits.
If you’re bringing a child, keep the age rule in mind: visitors under 16 must be accompanied by an adult who is at least 18.
Each inmate gets one 30-minute visit per week. If multiple family members want to visit, coordinate ahead of time so the slot doesn't go to waste.
- Call to schedule at least 24 hours ahead - Visits must be scheduled 24 hours in advance.
- Use the scheduling line during the stated hours - Call 919-857-9103 Monday–Thursday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m.
The person who shows up must be the same person who registered. Officers verify your identity, and refusing to provide requested information means your visit gets denied. Your picture ID stays at the registration desk until the visit ends.
Travel light. Handbags, purses, cell phones, and similar items go in lockers - you won't be able to carry personal belongings into the visiting area.

- ✓ Letters
- ✓ Packages
- ✓ Similar items you’re hoping to hand to the inmate during the visit
Warning: Bringing contraband into the facility can result in criminal prosecution. Rule violations may also get your visitation privileges suspended or terminated by the Officer in Charge (OIC).
