Visiting from Out of Town? How to Request a Special Visit at Wake County Jail
Traveling from far away and regular visiting hours don't work for you? Wake County Jail offers a "special visit" option for out-of-town visitors. Here's how to find out if you qualify and how to schedule one.
You must live at least 100 miles from Raleigh to qualify for a special visit. If you're closer than that, your request likely won't be approved.
Each visitor can only request one special visit every 30 days. Here's the catch that surprises people: if you've been doing regular visits, you won't be approved for a special visit. This option is specifically for out-of-towners who aren't already visiting through the normal schedule.
- ✓ No more than two visitors may be scheduled for a special visit.
- ✓ One of the two scheduled visitors must make the special-visit arrangements.
- Call to request the special visit - Contact 919-857-9103 to make arrangements.
- Call during the scheduling window - Requests must be made between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on normal workdays.
- Set it up before you travel - Arrangements have to be made prior to the visit so it can be scheduled properly.
One of the two people attending the special visit must be the one who schedules it. Bring a valid government-issued photo ID when you arrive.
Special visits happen Monday through Friday at two fixed times: 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Each visit lasts up to one hour, so plan your travel around those slots.
Note: All special visits are non-contact visits and are conducted by video visitation.
If there are problems with a special visit, the person involved must call 919-773-7965 to file a complaint.
