Mailing Letters to WCCW: How to Address Envelopes and What Not to Send
Mail to someone at WCCW must go through USPS, UPS, or FedEx. Other delivery services may cause delays or get rejected entirely.
Address Outside Envelope
- ✓ Incarcerated person’s full name
- ✓ Six-digit DOC number
- ✓ Correct facility address (WCCW)
- ✓ Unit name where they live (requested, but not required for delivery)
Sending a money order or cashier's check? Pay close attention to the envelope. Include the recipient's full name, their six-digit DOC number, and the correct facility address. Your return address must follow USPS standards and include your first and last name. Incomplete return addresses are one of the most common reasons items get held up.
Items Not to Send
- ✓ Cash
- ✓ Personal checks
- ✓ Stamps
- ✓ Any mail that includes these will be rejected and returned at the incarcerated individual’s expense
Legal Mail Handling
- ✓ Clearly mark the front of the envelope with “Legal Mail”
- ✓ Or mark it “Attorney/Client”
- ✓ Or mark it “Confidential” (or similar wording that designates it as legal mail)
Legal mail follows different rules. Staff will open incoming legal mail while the incarcerated person is present, then inspect it to verify it qualifies as legal mail and check for contraband.
If your loved one writes to you from WCCW, they can't send postcards. All outgoing mail must include a complete return address.
