WSP only accepts mail sent through USPS, UPS, or FedEx. Use another carrier and your letter may not make it through.

Addressing Envelope

  • Write the incarcerated person’s full committed name on the envelope
  • Add their six-digit DOC number on the envelope

Use the correct facility address for Washington State Penitentiary on the envelope. If you know the unit where the person lives, include the unit name too - it's not required for delivery, but it can help route the mail more smoothly.

Don't leave the pages inside blank of identifying info. The letter itself must also be addressed to the incarcerated individual - not just the envelope.

Warning: Don’t mail cash, personal checks, or stamps to someone at WSP. That mail will be rejected and returned at the incarcerated individual’s expense.

Legal Mail Handling

  • Clearly mark the front of the envelope “Legal Mail”
  • Or label it “Attorney/Client”
  • Or label it “Confidential” (or similar wording that clearly designates it as legal mail)

Envelopes clearly from a court get handled as legal mail even without a "legal mail" label. Still, marking it clearly helps avoid confusion and delays.

Legal mail contents: Legal mail may only contain paper documents.
