How Video Visits Work at Waukesha County Jail

All public visitation at Waukesha County Jail happens through video. Don't expect in-person, face-to-face contact visits - that's not the standard option for family and friends. Want to visit from home? Remote video visits run through GTL. You'll need to register on their site and complete their setup process before scheduling.

Note: Remote video visitation is provided by GTL. You’ll register through the Waukesha County GTL site and follow the on-screen instructions to set up a visit.

You can only visit one inmate per day. If you have more than one person at the jail you’re trying to see (or you’re helping multiple families), you’ll need to plan your visits on separate days so you don’t get turned away at check-in.

You're limited to two visits per week. The jail counts weeks from Sunday through Saturday, so back-to-back weekend visits only count as separate weeks if they fall on opposite sides of that Sunday-to-Saturday window. Staff check the visitation log - exceeding the limit can put your visitation privileges at risk.

Each session allows a maximum of two visitors per inmate. If more people want to visit, you'll need to rotate across different sessions while staying within the two-visits-per-week limit. Decide ahead of time who's going - don't leave it to the last minute.

Photo ID Checkin

  • Bring photo ID that shows your name
  • Bring photo ID that shows your date of birth
  • Make sure the ID includes your photograph

Public visits are video-based, but the jail does allow contact visitation in limited situations. Contact visits are appointment-only, available Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. They're approved for specific needs - trial preparation, reviewing extensive discovery materials, or other pre-approved circumstances. These aren't for regular family visits. Think of them as a separate process for legal or professional reasons.

  1. Call to request an appointment - Contact visits are scheduled by phone at (262) 548-7171, Monday through Friday, between 7:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
  2. Plan at least one business day ahead - Appointments must be made at least one business day before the date you want.
  3. Avoid blackout days - Appointments won’t be accepted on county-identified holidays or furlough days.

Note: If you’re trying to arrange a contact visit for a legal or professional reason, it helps to gather your details first (who you’re visiting and what you’re requesting) before you call.

Tips First Video

  • Expect video-only public visitation at the jail, not in-person contact visits
  • Have your photo ID ready (it needs your name, date of birth, and photo)
  • Plan around the “one inmate per day” rule so you don’t waste a trip
  • Keep the two-visitor-per-session cap in mind and decide who will attend
  • Space visits out so you don’t exceed two visits in a Sunday–Saturday week
  • If you’re visiting remotely, register through GTL and follow their setup instructions before you try to book a time

Setting up a remote video visit? Build in extra time after you register. Visitor verification through GTL can take up to 72 hours, so don't wait until the day before you want to talk.

Note: If you’re trying to schedule a contact visit, remember it’s appointment-only and won’t be booked on county-identified holidays or furlough days - confirm timing before you make plans.
