Before Your Visit to Waupun: What to Bring (and What to Leave at Home)
A little prep goes a long way at Waupun Correctional Institution. Use this checklist to show up ready, clear security without issues, and avoid having your visit cut short.
Got questions before you head out? Contact Waupun Correctional Institution at 200 S. Madison Street, Waupun, WI 53963, or call 920-324-5571. Having the address and phone number handy can save you a wasted trip if you need to confirm something beforehand.
In-person visits at WCI must be scheduled at least 48 hours ahead, and you can book up to 14 days in advance through ICSolutions. Trying to visit on a specific day? Don't wait until the last minute - give yourself that two-day buffer.
Visits last up to 2.5 hours, so plan your day around that window. WCI allows a maximum of four approved visitors per visit - adults, minors, and infants all count toward that limit. At least one visitor must be an adult.
- ✓ If you are 16 or older, bring photo identification for entry.
WCI is strict about what you can bring into the visiting area. On your person, only a wedding ring (if married) and emergency medication are allowed. Leave everything else behind before entering the visiting room.
Note: Emergency medication is the exception to the “no items” rule in the visiting area. Bring only what you need for an emergency.
The dress code applies to visitors too. What you wear matters, and the person you're visiting must also follow the institution's clothing rules during your time together.
You'll go through a metal detector. If you can't clear it within three attempts, you won't be allowed into the visiting room. Before leaving home - and again before stepping inside - remove extra jewelry and skip clothing with metal that commonly triggers alarms. Buckles, snaps, bib overalls, and underwire bras are frequent problems.
Since clearing the metal detector is a hard requirement, keep what you bring to a minimum. The simplest approach: leave unnecessary items at home so you're not sorting through metal-heavy belongings at the door and risking denial if you can't clear screening.
Wondering what to expect on the other side of the table? During visits, the person you're seeing must wear state-issued outer garments - a green shirt and green pants - plus state-issued shoes.
Planning to grab something from the vending machines? Bring a credit or debit card - they don't take cash.
If you use a wheelchair or need any accommodation, handle that before your visit - don't try to sort it out at the front desk. Call WCI at 920-324-5571 ahead of time to ask what steps are needed.
