What Happens During and After Your Visit: Rules Your Loved One Must Follow at Waupun
Visits at Waupun come with rules your loved one has to follow before, during, and after seeing you. Understanding what happens on their side makes the whole experience less confusing — and helps you avoid problems that could cut things short.
At Waupun, your loved one will be pat searched before the visit begins and strip-searched afterward. It's intense, but it's routine - the institution does this to control contraband and keep the visiting area and housing units safe. If your loved one seems anxious about visits, these searches are often why. It's not personal; it's procedure.
People in custody at Waupun must wear state-issued clothing during visits - the green shirt, green pants, and state-issued shoes. They can't wear personal clothes in the visiting room, even for special occasions.
State-issued underwear is also required during visits. Non-compliant clothing can cause delays or affect whether the visit happens at all.
Once the visit starts, your loved one has to stay seated at their table. No walking to vending machines, no stepping away to talk elsewhere in the room.
- ✓ Your loved one can’t handle money during the visit.
- ✓ Only visitors are allowed to operate the vending machines.
- ✓ Any edibles bought during the visit have to be finished, thrown away, or sent out with the visitor - they can’t be taken back to the housing unit.
Want to take photos? Ask staff about the process as soon as you arrive, before the visit begins. Photo procedures in prison settings are often very structured, and knowing the rules upfront helps you avoid interruptions.
If visiting rules aren't followed, a Security Supervisor can end the visit on the spot. Violations can also lead to further action by the Security Director - including termination, suspension, or revocation of visiting privileges. That affects future visits, not just that day.
