What Makes West Central Different: Treatment Mission, Housing, Programs, and Daily Life

Since July 2012, West Central has operated as an integrated treatment facility for female probation violators with a dual diagnosis. The core focus is mental health and substance abuse treatment, with 138 beds dedicated to that mission. Another 46 beds house female probationers who support the facility's work assignments - a major part of daily life there.

West Central houses adult female felons. It's a relatively small facility by prison standards, with a capacity of 193. For families, that scale matters. Daily life revolves around a set number of dorms, scheduled programs, and work assignments rather than a sprawling campus with many housing units.

Note: West Central’s mission includes 46 beds for female probationers who support the facility’s work mission, with work details that can include assignments at State Offices Tift Campus, the Offender Administration Unit, and Care and Custody.

Housing is organized into four open dormitories with bunk beds, each holding 46 people. Residents live in a shared, open setting rather than individual cells. This dorm-style setup shapes everything from sleep routines to how movement and accountability work throughout the day.

The facility also has five isolation/segregation cells, separate from the open dorm setting. These are used when someone is placed in isolation or segregation.

Security level: West Central is a medium security facility.

What Makes West Central Different: Treatment Mission, Housing, Programs, and Daily Life

Treatment is the centerpiece at West Central. Programs include substance use disorder treatment and mental health services - fitting the facility's integrated treatment mission for women with dual diagnosis needs. If your loved one is there for the treatment-focused side, much of her schedule will revolve around these services.

West Central offers academic programming, including LLR, ABE, and GED classes. Education can be a big part of building stability - especially for women trying to return home with better options than they had before.

Beyond clinical treatment and academics, the facility offers Motivation for Change programming, reentry programming, and therapy. These are designed to support behavior change and help residents prepare for what comes next - not just get through the sentence.

Work experience comes through assigned work details. At West Central, these include assignments at State Offices Tift Campus, the Offender Administration Unit, and Care and Custody. If your loved one gets a work detail, it affects her daily schedule and how she talks about "going to work" while she's there.

Also available: West Central offers religious activities.

Because West Central is both medium security and treatment-focused, daily life is structured around programs, therapy, classes, and work assignments. That structure shapes when your loved one is available and how she plans her time - especially when she's balancing treatment services with other required activities.

  1. Ask what she’s scheduled for right now - treatment services, classes, and work details can all be part of her routine, and knowing which ones she’s in helps you understand her day.
  2. Talk with her about goals, not just time - motivation and reentry programming, therapy, education, and vocational/OJT options can be easier to stick with when she has family support behind the effort.
  3. Keep work details in mind when planning communication - assignments like State Offices Tift Campus, the Offender Administration Unit, or Care and Custody may affect her availability and the rhythm of her week.
