How medical care works at West Valley Detention Center — requesting care and the $3 copayment
Worried about someone's health at West Valley Detention Center? The most helpful thing you can know is how they request care and how the $3 co-payment works.
WVDC offers on-site medical, dental, and mental health services - including daily physician sick call, medication administration, dialysis, radiology, dental care, and psychiatric care. To access any of these, an inmate fills out a Health Service Request form. Think of it as the facility's standard "put it in writing" process for requesting care.
Health staff are on duty around the clock. If symptoms get worse overnight or outside normal business hours, there's always someone available to respond.
To request care, an inmate fills out a Health Service Request form - whether it's for medical, dental, or mental health needs. Forms are available in each housing unit. Can't find one? Any staff member can provide a copy.
Note: Health services are available 24 hours a day at WVDC, so requests and urgent needs aren’t limited to daytime hours.
WVDC charges a $3.00 co-payment for self-initiated requests. When an inmate submits a Health Service Request on their own, that amount is deducted from their account.
Good to know: An inmate will not be denied health care because they can’t pay the $3.00 co-payment, and there is no co-payment for follow-up care after the initial self-initiated request.
- Ask them to submit a Health Service Request - Medical, dental, and mental health care are requested by completing this form.
- Tell them where to get the form - Forms are available in each housing unit, or they can request one from any staff member.
If your loved one is hesitating because they don't have money on their account, reassure them: no one gets denied care because they can't pay. And follow-up appointments after that first self-request don't trigger another fee - so they shouldn't worry that every check-in costs more.
