Sending Money to an Inmate at Western Correctional Institution: The MoneyGram How-To
The details you enter in MoneyGram matter. One wrong digit or code can delay the deposit—or send it somewhere else entirely. Use the exact format below.
Wait until the person has physically arrived at a Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) facility before sending anything. MoneyGram deposits are tied to the inmate's BOP register number and name, and transfers run on a set schedule. Send too early, and the payment can easily go sideways. Once they've arrived, your deposit will post to the right account much faster.

Example: If the register number is 12345678 and the last name is DOE, the account number should look like: 12345678DOE.
- ✓ Confirm you have the inmate’s eight-digit register number
- ✓ Remove all spaces and dashes from the register number
- ✓ Type the inmate’s last name immediately after the number (no space)
- ✓ Double-check the spelling of the last name before you submit
MoneyGram requires a receive code for BOP payments - this isn't optional. Use receive code 7932, entered exactly as shown. Get it wrong, and the deposit may not go through.
Double-check this field: The receive code must be 7932 - one wrong number can derail the transfer.
When you send affects how quickly the money posts. The schedule runs on Eastern Time (EST). Funds sent between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. EST post within 2–4 hours. Send after 9:00 p.m. EST, and the deposit posts at 7:00 a.m. EST the next morning.
- ✓ Want the fastest posting? Send between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. EST (usually posts within 2–4 hours)
- ✓ Sending late? Anything after 9:00 p.m. EST posts at 7:00 a.m. EST the next morning
Most MoneyGram problems come down to small entry mistakes: wrong register number, spaces or dashes where they shouldn't be, a misspelled last name, or an incorrect receive code. Take an extra minute to verify every field. Fixing an error after the money is sent is much harder than catching it beforehand.
- Confirm they’ve physically arrived at a BOP facility - sending too early increases the chance of a misapplied payment.
- Verify the eight-digit register number - use all eight digits.
- Format the account number correctly - no spaces or dashes; type the register number followed immediately by the last name.
- Enter receive code 7932 - this code is always required for BOP MoneyGram deposits.
- Send during the faster posting window (EST) - between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. EST usually posts within 2–4 hours; after 9:00 p.m. EST posts at 7:00 a.m. the next morning.
