Bringing Children to Visit Western New Mexico C.F.: ID, Limits, Dress, and Contact Rules

Bringing kids to a prison visit takes extra planning. Here are the rules that trip families up most often—who can bring a minor, how many children are allowed, what they can wear, and what physical contact is (and isn't) permitted during a contact visit.

Minors can't visit Western New Mexico C.F. alone. Every child must have proper ID and be accompanied by a parent, legal guardian, or responsible adult relative. The only exception? If you have documented proof that the minor is legally married to the incarcerated person.

Even with everyone approved, the visiting room limits how many people can sit at the table. Space permitting, an incarcerated person can have up to three visitors age six or older at one time. They can also have up to three children age five or younger - again, if space allows.

For clothing, age matters. Kids 8 and older must follow the adult dress code according to gender - so plan their outfit the same way you'd plan your own.

Children 7 and younger follow the adult dress code too, with one exception: they can wear short pants, as long as the shorts aren't shorter than three inches above the knee.

Physical contact is still tightly controlled during contact visits. Inmates can share a brief hug and/or kiss at the start and end of the visit - that's it.

One question families often ask: can the inmate hold their child? Yes - policy allows an inmate to hold his or her own children during a contact visit.

Tips and Visit End Reasons

  • Make sure any minor visitor is properly identified and accompanied by a responsible adult relative, parent, or legal guardian (or bring documented proof of the minor’s legal marriage to the inmate).
  • Plan your group size around the room limits: up to three visitors age 6+ and up to three children age 5 and under at one time, if space permits.
