Visitor Dress Code Checklist for Western New Mexico C.F.
Dress code violations are one of the fastest ways to get turned away at the door. Use this checklist to prepare for your visit at Western New Mexico C.F. — and avoid surprises at check-in.
Western New Mexico C.F. follows the New Mexico Corrections Department's
- ✓ Clothing must not expose cleavage.
- ✓ Clothing must not expose the midriff.
- ✓ Clothing must not expose the shoulders.
- ✓ Clothing must not expose any part of the breast.
- ✓ Clothing must not expose any part of the upper thigh.
- ✓ Wear undergarments, and make sure they don’t show through or peek out from your outer clothing.
- ✓ Wear appropriate footwear for a security screening and a visiting room.
- ✓ Leave headwear at home unless you’ve confirmed an exception is allowed under the facility’s dress code attachment.
Age 8 is the cutoff for kids. Anyone 8 or older must follow the adult dress code (based on gender), so plan their outfits with the same "no exposed skin" rules you'd use for yourself.
- ✓ Children age 7 and younger still have to follow the adult dress code (according to gender), with specific exceptions.
- ✓ One key exception: children 7 and younger may wear shorts, as long as the shorts are no shorter than three inches above the knee.
All children - including infants - must be fully clothed during the entire visit. A diaper alone won't cut it. Bring a simple outfit that keeps your baby covered from check-in through the end of the visit.
Examples-to-avoid
- ✓ Low-cut tops that show cleavage
- ✓ Crop tops or shirts that ride up and expose the midriff
- ✓ Sleeveless tops that leave shoulders exposed
- ✓ Anything that exposes any part of the breast (including gapping or cutouts)
- ✓ Short skirts/shorts or high slits that expose any part of the upper thigh
- ✓ See-through or sheer clothing (even if you’re wearing something underneath)
- ✓ Tops that function like underwear as outerwear (for example, tank-style tops meant to be worn under another shirt)
- ✓ Outfits where undergarments are visible (straps, waistbands, or fabric showing through)
- ✓ Beachwear (including bathing suits as outer garments)
- ✓ Clothing with profanity, drug/alcohol themes, or graphics that could be read as gang-affiliated
Reminder: Staff use the Dress Code for Visitors attachment (CD-100201.B) when deciding who can enter. If you're unsure about an outfit, go more modest.
- Ask what specific item is the problem - get a clear answer (for example, “upper thigh showing” or “shoulders exposed”) so you don’t repeat the issue.
- See if you can fix it quickly - if you have a spare layer or can change, do that; otherwise ask whether you can reschedule.
- Write down what you were told - note the date and the reason you were denied so you can plan better next time.
- Confirm the dress code before your next visit - Western New Mexico C.F. follows the Dress Code for Visitors attachment (CD-100201.B), and checking it can save you a wasted trip.
