Why Your Loved One in Restrictive Housing Can't Have Visits Right Now
If your loved one is in restrictive housing at NENMCF and a visit was denied, it almost always comes down to their current status. Here's what those statuses mean for visitation and the practical steps you can take.
At NENMCF, people in Restrictive Housing on Disciplinary or PHD status are not allowed visits. If you've been told you can't schedule or complete a visit right now, this is one of the first things to ask about. The restriction is tied to their housing status, not anything you did as a visitor.
When visits are allowed, in-person visits at NENMCF happen Monday through Friday and must be scheduled at least a week in advance. All in-person (barrier) visits are non-contact unless you're immediate family and have provided proof of kinship. If the default setup is behind a barrier, that's standard.
Note: NMCD will not provide offender health or mental health information without a current, signed, and witnessed or notarized release from the offender authorizing that release.
If you're dealing with a denial or suspension of visiting privileges, knowing the form names helps when talking to staff. NMCD's visitation policy (CD-100200) lists a Visitor Application for Visiting Privileges (CD-100201.1), plus several forms tied to changes in visiting status: Denial/Suspension of Visiting Privileges (CD-100201.2), Special Visit Request (CD-100201.3), Visitor Notification of a Proposed Action (CD-100201.4), and a Visiting Suspension Appeal (CD-100202.8).
- ✓ If your visiting privileges were denied or suspended and you need the paperwork documenting that action, ask about the Denial/Suspension of Visiting Privileges form (CD-100201.2).
- ✓ If you are trying to request an exception or a one-off visit type, ask about the Special Visit Request form (CD-100201.3).
- ✓ If you were told there is a proposed action affecting visits and you want to understand what is being alleged or considered, ask about the Visitor Notification of a Proposed Action form (CD-100201.4).
- ✓ If you want to challenge a suspension through the formal process, ask about the Visiting Suspension Appeal form (CD-100202.8).
- Contact Family Constituent Services: Email CDFamilySrvcs@cd.nm.gov or call (505) 827-8710 or (505) 231-4762.
- Ask for their current visiting status: Specifically ask whether they are in Restrictive Housing and whether they are on Disciplinary or PHD status, since those statuses block visits at NENMCF.
- Ask what process applies next: Request the name and number of any forms involved (for example, denial/suspension paperwork, a special visit request, or an appeal form), and ask what timelines or steps apply in your situation.
Reminder: If you're calling to ask about health or mental health concerns, NMCD cannot share that information without a current, signed, and witnessed or notarized release from your loved one. While you have staff on the line, ask which visitation forms you may need to submit for your situation (such as a suspension appeal or special visit request).
