What Happens to Your Inmate Account Balance When You're Released from Western Tidewater Jail
If you have money left in your inmate account when you're released from Western Tidewater Jail, you can pick it up at the Administration Office in the Main Lobby. The office is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 3:45 pm, but closed on holidays and special events.
Most release funds are loaded onto a debit card. The exception? Balances under $25 are paid out in cash. When you pick up your debit card, staff will walk you through how it works and explain any fees.
Family members can pick up an inmate's funds, but only with prior approval from the Superintendent or Deputy Superintendent. Call 757-942-0530 to request permission. Once approved, pickups happen at the Administration Office in the Main Lobby, Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 3:45 pm (closed on holidays and special events).
Transferred to another facility instead of released? Your funds won't be waiting at the lobby. Western Tidewater Jail mails a check to the receiving facility when you leave, so your money follows you.
Note: Federal inmates transferred to a welcome center are handled differently. Western Tidewater Jail holds the check until your permanent facility is confirmed.
