Mailing Letters to Westmoreland County Prison: What Gets Rejected and Why
Westmoreland County Prison accepts mail, but small mistakes in formatting or content can get your letter rejected. Follow these rules to make sure your mail actually reaches your loved one.
Every envelope needs specific addressing details to be accepted. Include your full name and return address, the inmate's name and booking number, and the prison's address: 3000 South Grande Boulevard, Greensburg, PA 15601. Missing any of these can delay delivery or get your mail rejected entirely.
Note: Put the booking number on the envelope with the inmate’s name. It’s one of the easiest ways to prevent your letter from being rejected or misrouted.
Keep your envelope plain. The prison requires mail to be free of graffiti, decorations, stickers, decorative stamps, return-type labels, and tape. Even something that seems harmless - a sticker seal or taped corner - can make your mail noncompliant.
Skip padded envelopes and mailers. Mail in padded packaging gets routed to the property officer and won't be distributed to inmates. If what you're sending fits in a regular envelope, use that instead.
Warning: Decorative add-ons (stickers, tape, labels) can get mail rejected, and padded envelopes won’t be distributed to inmates.
Don't include photocopies. Westmoreland County Prison treats all photocopied material as contraband - including photocopied pictures. Printed copies of photos, copied documents, and other photocopied pages are a common reason mail gets rejected.
Polaroid-type photos won't be distributed either. If you're sending pictures, stick to standard prints - nothing Polaroid-style.
Tip: Avoid photocopies and Polaroid-type photos. Sending non-Polaroid, non-photocopied photos helps reduce the risk of rejection.
Sending money? Use a money order. Cash and personal checks won't be accepted through the mail, and including them can cause problems for your entire mailing.
Note: Don’t mail cash or a personal check. Use a valid money order so it can be accepted and credited properly.
Mail that doesn't meet the prison's criteria gets rejected and returned. The most common issues: missing the booking number, decorating or taping the envelope, or including contraband like photocopies. Do a quick check before you seal it - catching a small mistake at home beats having your letter bounce back.
