Westville Correctional Facility wasn't built as a prison. The campus originally opened as Beatty Memorial Hospital in February 1951—which explains why parts of the property feel more like a sprawling institutional site than a facility designed from scratch for corrections.

Westville Correctional Facility sits on a site that originally opened as Beatty Memorial Hospital in February 1951. After a 1974 lawsuit led to overcrowding reductions and the property's transfer to the Department of Correction, the facility was renovated and reopened as Westville Correctional Facility in July 1979. A 220-bed Maximum Control Complex was added in 1991. Today, Westville holds more than 3,400 incarcerated individuals and offers programs focused on community service and re-entry. IDOA Public Works and the Department of Corrections are planning renovations beginning this year, with completion expected in late 2026 to early 2027. The goals: improved safety, better program space, and more efficient staffing and building costs. Check official facility materials for current procedures.
