Video Visit Equipment Checklist for Wichita County Jail Visits
Wichita County Jail uses the GettingOut/Visit Now video visit system. This checklist covers the equipment, browser, and internet requirements you should line up before your scheduled visit so you're not scrambling at the last minute.
For a video visit from home through GettingOut/Visit Now, you'll need a computer with a working webcam and microphone. Most laptops have both built in, so you may already be set. Without a camera and mic, you might be able to log in, but you won't actually be able to see or talk during the visit.
- ✓ Computer (desktop or laptop)
- ✓ Webcam (external or built-in)
- ✓ Microphone (external or built-in)
Your browser choice matters. Safari (version 4 or higher) or Firefox (version 7 or higher) is strongly recommended for computer-based video visits through GettingOut/Visit Now. Other browsers may not load the visit page correctly, which can keep you from starting your visit on time.
Tip: Headphones can make the audio clearer during your GettingOut/Visit Now video visit, but they aren't required.
You'll need high-speed internet for a reliable video visit. DSL or cable is required. Dial-up and satellite connections are not supported.
- Use the most stable connection you can: If you have a choice, pick a connection that is consistently fast enough for video.
- Reduce competing internet use: Pause streaming, downloads, or video calls on other devices during the visit.
- Use headphones if audio is echoing: They are recommended for the best experience, but not required.
A home computer isn't your only option. Some facilities offer video visits at lobby stations, and select locations also support video visits on Android through the Visit Now app. Availability varies, so confirm what Wichita County Jail actually offers before you count on mobile or lobby visits.
- ✓ If you want to use a phone or tablet: confirm Wichita County Jail supports video visits on the Visit Now Android app
- ✓ If you want to use a lobby station: confirm lobby video visits are offered and check any on-site rules before you go
Scheduling and tech setup go hand in hand. The basic flow: suggest a visit time to your loved one, wait for them to confirm, then log in at the agreed time. I recommend doing a quick test run earlier the same day (or at least logging in a few minutes early) so you can catch browser, camera, microphone, or internet issues before your visit window starts.
- Suggest a time and get confirmation: Propose the visit time to the inmate, then wait for them to confirm it.
- Check your browser: Use a supported browser (Safari 4+ or Firefox 7+ is recommended) so the visit page loads properly.
- Test your camera and microphone: Make sure your webcam and mic are selected correctly and working before the visit starts.
- Confirm your internet connection: Use high-speed DSL or cable (dial-up and satellite are not supported).
- Log in early: Sign in a few minutes before the scheduled start time so you are ready when it is time to connect.
Note: If your browser isn't supported or your connection isn't high-speed (DSL or cable), the visit page may not load when you try to start the call. Test ahead of time so you can fix problems before your scheduled slot.
