Understanding Wicomico County's 20-Minute Visit Limit and the No-Extension Policy
Wicomico County Detention Center runs a tight ship with visits. One scheduled visit per week, 20 minutes max, no extensions for lateness. Know the rules before you go, and you won't lose the visit you worked to set up.
Each inmate gets one scheduled visit per week. That's it. Treat it as your weekly window and plan everything around making it count.
Each visit is capped at 20 minutes. Your appointment time is your whole visit - don't expect a longer session, even if other facilities gave you more time.
One adult and up to two children under 18 can visit together. Kids must stay with the adult the entire time - no swapping supervision or stepping away.
You can't split the time into shorter sessions. One visit means one time slot - no breaking it into 10-minute turns or rotating visitors through the same appointment.
No-extension policy: If either you or the inmate is late, the visit time will not be extended, and it won’t be rescheduled.
This connects to how the schedule works. Once it's full, no changes are made. Unscheduled visits aren't allowed. If timing goes wrong, you can't ask staff to move you to another slot or squeeze you in.
- Call Front Reception to schedule - Visitation must be scheduled by the visitor.
- Use the scheduling windows - Call on Wednesday or Thursday between 8:00 AM–11:30 AM or 12:30 PM–2:00 PM.
- Use the correct phone/extension - Call 410-548-4850, Ext. 333.
- Schedule for the upcoming visiting day - Call during the window prior to the scheduled visiting day and lock in your time slot.
The facility only schedules the current week's visits. Planning ahead? You'll still need to call during the Wednesday/Thursday window for that specific week - they don't book future weeks in advance.
Don't show up more than 10 minutes early. Since they won't extend your time if you're late, build your buffer into your travel plan - not by arriving early at the door.
Once the visit ends, you must leave the facility. The lobby isn't a waiting area - no one can stay there while a visit is in progress. Plan your ride and any family handoffs accordingly.
- ✓ Bring an approved government ID with a photo and your current address.
- ✓ Do not bring a cell phone.
- ✓ Do not bring a camera (phones and cameras are considered contraband).
Miss your visit or lose time to lateness? Call Front Reception during the Wednesday/Thursday scheduling window to try again. Don't wait - once the schedule fills up, no changes are made.
Keep a simple log of your calls: date, time, and whether you reached someone. It helps you stay organized across scheduling windows, especially if you need to call back.
Reminder: Unscheduled visits are not permitted.
