Everyone at Wicomico County Detention Center has to follow the dress code, including children. If the Supervisor or their designee decides your outfit is inappropriate, you will not be allowed to visit. The safest bet: dress plainly and conservatively so there's no question at check-in.

Specific-items-not-permitted

  • Hats
  • Scarves
  • Head coverings
  • Sunglasses
  • Coats
  • Jackets
  • Shawls

Fit matters here, not just the type of clothing. Pants must be worn correctly around the waist. Sagging is not allowed. The facility also lists several styles that are not permitted inside, including tube tops, tank tops, halter tops, and see-through clothing; mini skirts, mini dresses, shorts, skorts, and culottes; and tight-fitting clothing such as leotards, spandex, and leggings. Clothing that exposes the midriff, side, or back is also flagged, along with tops or dresses with revealing necklines and or excessive splits, and pajamas or similar type clothing. If your outfit falls into any of those categories, staff can deny the visit based on attire alone.

Note: Staff can turn you away if your clothing is deemed inappropriate. When in doubt, pick the more conservative option.

Don't assume kids get a pass. Wicomico County Detention Center applies the same "appropriate attire" expectation to children, and a child's clothing can lead to a denied visit if staff considers it inappropriate.

Not sure whether something crosses the line? Plan your outfit around what the facility clearly allows. Avoid any of the not-permitted items listed above, make sure pants sit at the waist (no sagging), and keep tops and bottoms modest. Give staff no reason to turn you away over clothing.

  1. Build your outfit around the prohibited list - skip hats, scarves, head coverings, sunglasses, and outer layers like coats, jackets, and shawls.
  2. Check fit and coverage - avoid revealing, see-through, or tight-fitting clothing, and skip pajamas or similar type clothing.
  3. Fix sagging before you leave - pants must sit correctly at the waist, or you risk being turned away.
