How to Add Someone to an Inmate’s Visitors List at William P. Clemens Unit (and why changes are limited)
Getting on someone's approved visitors list at the William P. Clemens Unit isn't something you handle at the front desk on visit day. The inmate controls the list, changes are limited, and planning ahead makes all the difference.
At the William P. Clemens Unit, each inmate can have up to 10 people on their official Visitors List. That cap is fixed, so if the list is already full, someone has to be removed before a new person can be added.

A different schedule applies to state jail, Intermediate Sanction Facility (ISF), and Substance Abuse Felony Punishment (SAFP) inmates - they can change their Visitors List once every 60 days. Not sure which category applies? Assume the six-month rule until the unit confirms otherwise.
Why the limits exist: The Visitors List is an official, controlled list tied to approved visitation. Limiting how often it can be changed helps the system manage and verify who’s allowed to visit, without constant churn.
- Have the inmate request the change - The inmate is the one who adds or removes names from their Visitors List, so your first step is coordinating with them directly about who should be listed.
- Call the unit before you travel - Visitation information is updated frequently, and you don’t want to make the drive only to find out something changed. Call to confirm the inmate is at the unit, has visitation privileges, and that visitation hasn’t been canceled.
- ✓ Confirm the inmate is assigned to the William P. Clemens Unit
- ✓ Confirm the inmate currently has visitation privileges
- ✓ Confirm you are on the inmate’s approved Visitors List
- ✓ Confirm the unit’s current visitation schedule for the day you plan to go
- ✓ Verify visitation has not been canceled
If you were removed from an inmate's Visitors List, you can appeal in writing to the Director's Review Committee (DRC). The deadline is strict: submit your appeal within 14 days of the date on your written notice of removal. Send it to: Director's Review Committee (DRC), PO Box 99, Huntsville, TX 77342.
Being on the list is just the first step - planning the actual visit takes coordination. Each inmate gets only one visit per weekend. If two groups show up the same weekend, the later arrivals can be turned away. The fix is simple: pick a weekend in advance and make sure everyone on the Visitors List knows the plan.
Need to fit more people in? Ask about a split visit. This is where one group visits for part of the time and another group takes over for the rest. Both regular and special split visits allow up to four adults total. To request one, tell the visitation officer during check-in - before you're processed.
Tip: Call ahead before you travel and confirm the plan for that day, especially if you’re hoping to do a split visit. It’s the best way to avoid getting turned away at check-in.
