How to Get on an Inmate's Visitors List at William P. Clemens Unit
Getting approved to visit at William P. Clemens Unit comes down to two things: the inmate adds you to their list, and the unit processes it. Here's how the list works, how to confirm you're on it, and what to do if you get removed.
Each inmate at William P. Clemens Unit can have up to 10 names on their Visitors List. If the list is already full, someone has to be removed before you can be added.
Clemens is an institutional unit, which means the Visitors List can only be changed once every six months. If the inmate recently made a list change, you might have to wait before they can add you.
Reminder: Visitation is a privilege. Visits can be temporarily restricted for an inmate or a visitor due to rule violations, lockdowns, escapes, disturbances, or health and safety emergencies.
The inmate has to add you - visitors can't add themselves. If you're waiting to be approved, start by checking with your loved one to make sure they've actually submitted your information.
Once the inmate requests a change, unit staff handle the paperwork. Keep those two constraints in mind: max 10 people, and changes only every six months. That explains most "why can't they just add me today?" situations.
- ✓ Expect electronic monitoring during visits (attorney-client visits are the exception).
- ✓ Leave your cell phone behind - no cell phones are allowed inside the secure perimeter.
- ✓ Plan for screening: vehicles and visitors can be searched by unit staff.
- ✓ Don’t bring cash other than coins, and keep coins to $35 or less.
- Ask the inmate to confirm you were added - inmates are responsible for adding loved ones to their Visitors List, and the 10-name limit can affect whether there’s room.
- Verify before you travel - visitation is a privilege and can be restricted for reasons like rule violations, lockdowns, or health and safety emergencies, so it’s smart to confirm your status with the unit before you make the trip.
Being on the approved visitor list also matters if you want to deposit money into the inmate's Trust Fund account. Since September 1, 2020, only senders on the approved visitor list (or Inmate Telephone List) can deposit funds. Options include Money Orders or Cashier's Checks, ACH (debit), and vendor services like JPay and TouchPay.
Removed from the list for improper conduct? You can appeal. Send a written appeal to: Director's Review Committee (DRC), PO Box 99, Huntsville, TX 77342. You have 14 days from the date on your removal notice to submit it.
Deadline: Your appeal has to be submitted within 14 days of the date on your written removal notice.
