What to Bring (and What to Leave Behind) When Visiting Wise County Jail

Two things get you through the door at Wise County Jail: your name on the inmate's visitation card, and proof of who you are. If you're 17 or older, bring a photo ID. No ID, or your name's not on the visitation card? You're not getting in.

Kids can visit, but not alone. Anyone 16 or younger needs to come with an approved adult visitor. Show up without that adult, and the visit won't happen.

Items Not Allowed

  • Purses
  • Diaper bags
  • Packages

Staff will turn you away if your outfit doesn't meet the dress code. Skip the short shorts (above the knee), tank tops, short dresses, anything too tight, or revealing clothing. When in doubt, go conservative. It beats driving all the way there and being told you can't go in.

Bringing kids? Start with the age rule: anyone 16 or younger must be accompanied by an approved adult visitor. Confirm that adult is on the approved list before you go - otherwise you risk getting turned away at check-in.

Reminder: You’re expected to keep minor children under control in the lobby and visitation rooms. If children create a disturbance, the visit may be denied or ended early.

Timing matters. Sign in at least 30 minutes before the visitation period ends, or you may be denied entry. Standard visits last 20 minutes. Live more than 100 miles away? Bring proof of your address, and you may qualify for a 40-minute visit under normal circumstances.

Note: Jail staff can deny or terminate any visit if something comes up that threatens the safe and secure operation of the facility.
