Before You Drive to Wynne Unit: A Pre-Visit Checklist
A little prep can save you a wasted trip. Use this checklist to make sure your visit is actually happening before you hit the road.
Before you drive out, confirm two things: the person you're visiting is still assigned to Wynne Unit, and they have visitation privileges. Assignments change. So does visit status. A trip that would've worked last week can fall apart if the person moved or lost their privileges.
- ✓ Call Wynne Unit for final confirmation of the inmate’s location and visit status before you drive.
- ✓ If you don’t have the right number, use the official unit phone number list to make sure you’re calling the correct unit.
Check the Wynne Unit visitation schedule and make sure visits haven't been canceled. Unit-wide cancellations get posted on the TDCJ homepage - and when visitation is canceled, even eligible inmates can't receive visitors that day.
Tip: Re-check the schedule the morning you plan to travel, then call the unit for last-minute changes before you leave.
Make sure you're actually approved to visit. If your name isn't on the inmate's Visitors List, you'll be turned away at check-in. Not sure if you're on the list? Verify before you go.
- Confirm you’re approved - check your status against the inmate’s Visitors List before you make travel plans.
- Call the unit if there’s any doubt - staff can verify whether you’re approved; use the official unit phone number list if you need the correct number.
Check4 ID Clothing
- ✓ Bring an acceptable photo ID for entry.
- ✓ Check the official list of appropriate/acceptable photo identification before you go, so you don’t arrive with an ID that won’t be accepted.
Plan your outfit ahead of time. Double-check the clothing guidelines before you leave - if what you're wearing doesn't comply, you can be refused a visit even if everything else checks out.
Expect to be searched. Wynne Unit staff may search you and your vehicle, so keep your car and pockets clear of anything that could be considered prohibited. Not sure about an item? Check the allowed/not-allowed guidance before you leave home. Don't gamble on talking your way through at the gate.
- ✓ Bring no cash, except coins (no more than $35).
- ✓ Do not bring a cell phone inside the secure perimeter.
- ✓ Plan ahead for where you’ll leave anything that can’t go in with you (for example, secured in your vehicle before you enter).
Warning: Prohibited items can end your visit fast. Before you pull onto unit property, do a quick sweep of your car and belongings so you don’t bring anything that could trigger a search issue.
Wynne Unit allows only one visit per weekend per inmate. If multiple people want to go, coordinate ahead of time - with others on the Visitors List and with the inmate when possible. Otherwise, someone might drive out only to be turned away because a visit already happened that weekend.
If your visit is terminated or you're removed from the Visitors List for improper conduct, you can appeal. Submit your appeal in writing within 14 days of the date on your removal notice. Send it to the Director's Review Committee (DRC), PO Box 99, Huntsville, TX 77342.
- Gather the details - use the written notice of removal to note the date and what happened.
- Write your appeal - keep it clear and focused on the removal decision.
- Mail it within 14 days - send your written appeal to: Director’s Review Committee (DRC), PO Box 99, Huntsville, TX 77342.
