Sending Mail and Messages to Yakima County Jail: Where to Send, What’s Allowed, and What’s Rejected

Sending mail to Yakima County Jail is straightforward once you know the right address and format. Most problems happen when people send general mail directly to the jail instead of Securus, or include items that get rejected during screening.

General inmate mail goes through Securus, a third-party vendor, not directly to the jail. Send it to: PO Box 20888, Tampa, FL 33622. Include the incarcerated person's name and ID number on the envelope.

Heads up: Any inmate mail received after January 23, 2023 will not be forwarded and will be returned to the sender.

  • Use a white envelope.
  • Write a clear return address in pen.

Keep it simple for regular correspondence. Standard letters are fine. Money orders and checks are also accepted.

Legal mail works differently and goes directly to the facility. Send it to Yakima County Department of Corrections, 111 N Front Street, Yakima, WA 98901. Include the incarcerated person's name and booking number, and clearly label the envelope "Legal Mail."

  • Write “Legal Mail” on the envelope.
  • Include the inmate’s name and booking number.
  • Include a clear return address written in pen.

Keep your mail flat and plain if you want it to arrive. Greeting cards with 3-D elements, electronics, pop-ups, fold-outs, or oversized dimensions get rejected. Other common rejects: stamps, stickers, bubble or padded envelopes, Polaroid photos, newspaper or magazine cutouts, booklets, and homemade or hand-colored drawings.

Content matters too. Photos or writings depicting gang activity, criminal activity, nudity, sexually explicit material, partial nudity, or racially inflammatory content are all prohibited.

Note: If something is on the prohibited list (either the item itself or the content), it will not be delivered to the incarcerated person.

Yakima County Jail offers Edovo Messenger, but not everyone qualifies. Inmates with current charges for domestic violence, violation of a court order, harassment, or intimidating a witness cannot use it.

Warning: All Edovo Messenger messages are monitored, and they may be used in disciplinary action or criminal prosecution.
