Loan periods at Yancey County Library depend on what you're checking out. Books, audiobooks, and music CDs get three weeks. New books have a shorter two-week loan. DVDs and Blu-rays? Just one week. Digital materials work differently: you choose your preferred loan duration when you download.

  • Books, audiobooks, and music CDs: 3 weeks
  • New books: 2 weeks
  • DVDs and Blu-rays: 1 week

Note: Digital materials have variable loan periods. When you download an item, you can select the loan duration you prefer.

Most items can be renewed automatically up to two times. That extra buffer helps when life gets busy. You can also place holds. If something you want is already checked out, placing a hold puts you in line for it when it comes back.

Hold timing: Once your hold is available, the library keeps it for 7 days. If another patron has placed a hold on an item you have, that hold can block further renewals.

Yancey County Library doesn't charge daily fines for overdue materials. You're still responsible for returning items on time, though. Due dates keep materials moving so other patrons can use them.

If an item stays unreturned long enough, the library treats it as lost. At Yancey County Library, that threshold is 60 days past the due date.

Lost or damaged-beyond-repair items come with a charge: the replacement cost at the time of purchase, plus a $5.00 processing fee per item. Need a new library card? Replacements cost $2.00.

Damaged items: Damage is assessed case by case. Any applicable fees are determined by the library director or a designee, and the $5.00 processing fee may apply.

  1. Track the due date - If you’re getting close, plan to return the item on time so it stays available for others.
  2. Know the 60-day cutoff - Items not returned within 60 days of the due date are considered lost.
  3. Expect lost-item charges - The library can bill the replacement cost (at the time of purchase) plus a $5.00 processing fee per item.
