Using Yancey County Library Resources While Your Loved One Is Incarcerated
When someone you care about is incarcerated, the public library becomes surprisingly useful for handling paperwork, printing, and online tasks. Here's how to make the most of Yancey County Library resources, and what rules to keep in mind.
Need a computer for forms, emails, or research? Yancey County Library's public computers are first-come, first-served. No reservations, no guaranteed time slots. Show up with a clear plan for what you need to accomplish once you're logged in.
- ✓ Sign in to use a computer using your library card or a guest pass.
- ✓ If a child under 18 is using the computers, they must be accompanied by an adult, and that adult is responsible for the child’s internet use.
- Plan for shorter sessions when it’s busy. When others are waiting, sessions are limited to 30 to 60 minutes, so prioritize the most urgent tasks first.
- Track your total time for the day. Each user may have up to 2 hours of total computer time per day, which helps if you need to return later to finish printing, uploading, or submitting forms.
Note: The library uses content filtering software on all public internet terminals (required by the Children's Internet Protection Act). If a site you need is blocked, you may have to complete that task another way.
Printing costs add up fast when you're making multiple copies of letters or documents. At Yancey County Library, black-and-white copies and print-outs cost $0.10 per page. Budget accordingly before you hit "print."
Rate check: Color printing is listed at two different prices in library policies ($0.25 per page in one place, $0.30 per page in another). Before printing a large color job, confirm the current rate at the desk to avoid surprises.
Handling sensitive matters and don't want to be photographed or recorded? Use the opt-out process right away. Notify a staff member when you arrive, and request a visible "No Photo" sticker at the circulation desk.
For privacy questions or basic "where do I start?" guidance, check in at the circulation desk when you arrive. If you're opting out of photos, letting staff know up front saves you from backtracking later.
Meeting Room
- ✓ The meeting room may be reserved by non-profit and other groups, and it is available during library hours only.
- ✓ Make reservations at least 48 hours in advance, and no more than 3 months in advance.
- ✓ A designated adult (18+) must complete the reservation form and be present for the entire meeting.
- ✓ Groups may use the meeting room up to 2 times per month.
Library rules are enforced. Staff may give verbal warnings or issue written trespass notices, and law enforcement can be called to remove anyone who refuses to follow directions. Repeat offenders or anyone engaging in criminal activity may face legal action under North Carolina General Statutes § 14-159.12 (First-Degree Trespass) and § 14-159.13 (Second-Degree Trespass).
