How to Get on an Inmate's Visiting List at York CI
Visiting someone at York CI starts with one requirement: you have to be on the inmate's approved visiting list. Once you understand how that list gets set up and what to expect at check-in, the rest is straightforward.
You must be on an inmate's approved visiting list before you can visit at York CI. Show up without approval, and you'll be turned away at check-in. Even after you're approved, the facility can still cancel or refuse a visit - if the inmate is on quarantine status, for example, or if scheduling issues come up.
Note: Being on the approved list is necessary, but it doesn't guarantee the visit will happen. Quarantine status, scheduling conflicts, or other operational issues can still lead to a visit being refused, shortened, or canceled.
First, confirm the inmate is actually assigned to York CI. Connecticut DOC's Inmate Search is the quickest way to verify. Once you've confirmed, check the facility's visiting schedule so you don't show up on the wrong day or time.
At York CI, the inmate initiates their visiting list - not you. During intake orientation, inmates work with a Correctional Counselor to set up their approved visiting and telephone lists. If you want to be added, your loved one needs to raise it with their counselor.
There are limits on how many people an inmate can have approved, and that number varies by facility level. At York CI, no more than 2 visitors - including children - are allowed per visit. If more than two people want to visit, you'll need to plan separate trips.
Checkin Expectations
- ✓ Make sure you’re on the inmate’s approved visiting list before you go
- ✓ Arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled visit to complete check-in
- ✓ Bring valid photo identification
- ✓ Don’t arrive late - your visit may be shortened or canceled if you miss the check-in window
Once you're approved, you can visit as long as the inmate has active visiting privileges. Just know that visits can still be shortened, canceled, or refused at the facility's discretion - quarantine status or scheduling issues can come up. Also, visits aren't held on state-observed holidays, so plan around the calendar.
