Facilities, programs, and services families should know about
Hawaii facilities operate differently depending on location and custody level. Halawa Correctional Facility, for example, is actually two separate facilities: a special needs facility and a medium security facility. On the programming side, the Department offers family reunification services and highlights opportunities like Laumaka Work Furlough at OCCC (an option for eligible male inmates to job seek, build stability, and find housing before release). Individual facilities have their own offerings too. KCCC is a 128-bed facility with programs including education, substance abuse treatment, religious counseling, cultural arts, and work furlough.
If you want to know what support is available, the Reentry Coordination Office publishes an In-Facility Programs & Services Inventory. This resource outlines what's offered at each facility. The Department's Community Resource Guide (in the Publications section) is another helpful reference. On safety and accountability, the Department publishes a PREA policy with "Zero Tolerance" against sexual abuse and sexual harassment toward an offender by another offender, staff member, volunteer, or contractor. When planning visits, you may see schedules organized into set sessions (for example, 0700–1000 and 1100–1400 on a facility visit calendar).
