Intake, facility assignment, and what newly admitted offenders may keep

In Iowa DOC, intake happens at different locations based on gender. Male offenders are processed through the Iowa Medical and Classification Center (IMCC) in Coralville. Female offenders go through the Iowa Correctional Institution for Women (ICIW) in Mitchellville. During intake, staff determine custody level and permanent facility assignment. New admissions can only bring a small set of personal items to reception and classification: a bible, an address book, a small amount of photos, and any cash.

If you're hoping your loved one will be placed at a specific prison or closer to home, know that Iowa DOC cannot accommodate requests for assignment to a specific facility or geographic region. Hardship transfers for a loved one's medical condition are not granted. Discuss assignment concerns with the offender's case manager. County jails have their own item drop-off rules. Woodbury County accepts soft-covered bibles Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Wednesday is "book day" for new soft-covered books with a receipt (Wednesday only), with a limit of two books. Bring ID when dropping items at the Jail Administration window.
