Common Questions
Q
How do I get on an inmate's approved visitor list?
For Maine Correctional Center visits, you must be on the resident’s approved visiting list and visits are by appointment only. MCC instructs you to complete a Visitor Application and mail it to the MCC Visit Office at 17 Mallison Falls Road, Windham, Maine 04062, and it states a background check is run for each requested visitor. MCC also says it emails information to approved applicants, so include an active, correctly-spelled email address on your application.
Q
Where should I send letters, photos, or packages and what format rules apply?
Maine Correctional Center instructions list one address for first-class mail other than legal mail (813 Cushing Road, Warren, ME 04864) and a different address for packages and legal mail (17 Mallison Falls Road, Windham, Maine 04062). Those same instructions say general correspondence must be on 8½ x 11 white paper and written or printed in black or dark blue ink. Cumberland County Jail states incoming mail must be sent in white legal-size envelopes (including postcards), with legal mail exempt from the white-envelope rule.
Q
Can I bring medications or drop off property for someone at intake?
It depends on the facility, and some do not accept drop-offs at all. Kennebec County Correctional Facility states property drop-offs are no longer accepted, and it says a committal can bring medications in the original container but will not be allowed to take narcotics while in custody. Cumberland County Jail states medication is provided by the medical unit and says no medications will be considered without an active prescription.
Q
Are inmate phone calls recorded and how can an attorney avoid that?
Cumberland County Jail states telecommunications are monitored and recorded except for attorney-client privileged calls. It also states defense attorneys must register phone numbers before an inmate calls them, which allows those calls not to be recorded.
