Find the right facility and contact the records or admin office

Start by confirming where your loved one is held, then call the office that handles your specific question (records, jail administration, or the facility front office). In Kennebec County, the Sheriff's Office is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, at 73 Winthrop Street in Augusta. You can reach them at (207) 623-3614 or toll-free at (800) 498-1930. The Kennebec County Correctional Facility is at a separate location: 115 State Street in Augusta, phone (207) 623-2270.

For records requests in Kennebec County, the records officer is available Monday through Friday, 7:00am to 3:00pm. Submit requests by email at records@kennebec.gov or call (207) 623-3614 ext. 1006. In Cumberland County, reach the Sheriff's Office Command Staff at (207) 774-1444 or Jail Administration at (207) 774-5939 ext. 2180. Cumberland County Jail is located at 50 County Way in Portland.

Looking for background on a specific county jail? Some counties publish facility summaries. York County, for example, describes its jail as a 350-bed facility responsible for the care, custody, and control of pre-trial and post-conviction inmates. When you're unsure who to contact, calling the facility's admin or records line first usually saves time and keeps you from showing up at the wrong lobby.

Common Questions

Q
How do I get on an inmate's approved visitor list?

For Maine Correctional Center visits, you must be on the resident’s approved visiting list and visits are by appointment only. MCC instructs you to complete a Visitor Application and mail it to the MCC Visit Office at 17 Mallison Falls Road, Windham, Maine 04062, and it states a background check is run for each requested visitor. MCC also says it emails information to approved applicants, so include an active, correctly-spelled email address on your application.

Q
Can I bring medications or drop off property for someone at intake?

It depends on the facility, and some do not accept drop-offs at all. Kennebec County Correctional Facility states property drop-offs are no longer accepted, and it says a committal can bring medications in the original container but will not be allowed to take narcotics while in custody. Cumberland County Jail states medication is provided by the medical unit and says no medications will be considered without an active prescription.

Q
How do I find an inmate's ID number to add commissary funds?

At Kennebec County Correctional Facility, the facility says you can call (207) 623-2270 ext. 1111 and speak with the Intake Officer on duty to learn an inmate’s identification number. York County’s commissary instructions note an Inmate ID number is required for TouchPay deposits (including at the lobby kiosk).

Q
Can I block an inmate from calling my phone number?

Kennebec County Correctional Facility says that if you do not want to receive phone calls from someone there, you can contact a Supervisor or the Intake Department and they can block your telephone number from being called. The same facility also says that to receive phone calls you may need to set up an inmate telephone account by calling 1-800-844-6591 (or using the provider’s website).
