Mail, photos, and publications: addresses, format rules, and what is allowed

Mail rules in Maine vary by facility, and sometimes the type of mail changes which address you should use. For Maine Correctional Center, the state lists one address for first-class mail (other than legal mail): 813 Cushing Road, Warren, ME 04864. Packages, newspapers, magazines, and legal mail go to a different address: 17 Mallison Falls Road, Windham, Maine 04062. Other facilities publish their own mailing addresses. Cumberland County Jail, for instance, accepts mail addressed c/o Cumberland County Jail at 50 County Way, Portland, ME 04102.

  • For Maine Correctional Center general correspondence: use 8½ x 11 white paper and write or print in black or dark blue ink.
  • For Cumberland County Jail incoming mail: use a white legal-size envelope (this includes postcards); incoming legal mail is exempt from the white envelope rule.
  • For Cumberland County Jail publications: magazines, books, and newspapers are only allowed from the publisher or Amazon.com, and inmates are limited to two magazine subscriptions.

Even when you follow the formatting rules, mail is still screened. Maine DOC policy allows staff to inspect, read, and restrict prisoner mail as needed to prevent contraband and maintain safety and security. If you're unsure which address or rules apply, verify the current instructions for the specific facility before mailing anything.
