Scheduling and rules for video visitation
Warning: Some Michigan jails don't allow face-to-face visiting at all and run visits electronically. Don't assume you can show up for an in-person visit without checking the jail's current policy.
- Confirm the vendor for that facility. Some facilities require you to create an account through GettingOut to visit. Other systems use different providers and rules.
- Make sure you are eligible to visit. Some video visitation policies only allow visits with people on an approved visiting list.
- Schedule within the allowed window, if scheduling is required. One example policy requires scheduling no less than 48 hours and no more than 4 weeks in advance (scheduled through the vendor, not facility staff).
- Know the visit format. In some GettingOut locations, you may be able to start an on-demand “Visit Now” session without scheduling, and if the person is unavailable you can schedule for later.
- Have a device plan. Some jails let you use a personal phone to visit, and also offer on-site video visit booths in the visitation area if you do not have an electronic device.
- Expect time limits and fees to vary. One example set of rules uses approximately 25 to 26 minute time slots, and describes a $2.50 per-visit charge with one free video visit per week. Always confirm current pricing and any free-visit allowance before you schedule.
If you're using GettingOut and need help, GettingOut lists a customer care phone number you can call. Use support when you can't find the person you want to visit, can't schedule, or aren't sure whether your account is linked to the right facility.
Common Questions
Q
Can I visit in person or only by video?
It depends on the jail, and some Michigan jails prohibit face-to-face visitation entirely and run visits electronically. One example policy states all visits are conducted electronically via tablets and directs friends and family to set up an account with GettingOut to visit. Always confirm the current visitation type for the specific facility before you go.
Q
How long are video visits and is there a charge?
Time limits and fees depend on the facility and can change. One example set of rules describes approximately 25 to 26 minute video visit slots and a $2.50 per-visit cost, with one free video visit per week. Check the vendor page for your facility to confirm the current length, price, and any free-visit allowance before you schedule.
Q
What if I do not have a smartphone or computer for a video visit?
Some Michigan jails offer on-site video visit booths in the visitation area, so you can still connect even without your own device. One facility example says visitors can use personal electronic devices, but the Sheriff’s Office also provides on-site video visit booths for people who do not have an electronic device.
