How to send mail, photos, and electronic letters

In Minnesota DOC, incoming mail is opened and scanned, and your loved one receives a copy. Addressing matters: include their full name, DOC OID number, the facility name, and the word "Minnesota" spelled out (not abbreviated). Mail is sent first to a service location outside Minnesota.

  1. Write their full name. Use the incarcerated person’s full legal name.
  2. Add the DOC OID number. Include “OID#” and the number.
  3. Add the facility name and “Minnesota.” DOC guidance says to spell out “Minnesota” (do not abbreviate).
  4. Use the mailing service address shown by DOC. The DOC example shows mail going to a P.O. Box in Phoenix, Maryland.

For electronic options, Minnesota DOC points families to a DOC webpage for email instructions and mentions TextBehind as a service for sending electronic letters, photos, and greeting cards. If you're mailing paperwork for a court case (not personal mail), Minnesota courts publish "service by mail and post" form packets to help you follow the correct process.
